I wanted to briefly remind people about the East Kingdom’s masking policy for all events, practices, etc. and make sure everyone is on the same page.
If you are at an outdoor event, under EK policy, you need to be masked, unless you are actively engaged in fencing or heavy list fighting.
If you are at an indoor event, under EK policy, you need to be masked at all times, even while actively engaged in fencing or heavy list fighting.
According to EK policy the mask must be worn properly over the nose and mouth and be recognizable as an “effective mask.” What’s an “Effective Mask?”
“Effective masks” are defined by the CDC at the link below. I’ve heard questions about gaiters. Gaiters are listed as effective by the CDC at this doc – if they are doubled up/folded over, so there are two layers of fabric. If they don’t stay doubled up, you’ve got to use a different mask.
Masks may be lowered briefly when eating or drinking, under EK policy. (I’d recommend practicing social distancing while the masks are briefly lowered).
I’ve checked this through with our EK Seneschal, as well, and we are well aligned. If you have any questions, feel free to DM me or email me at .
Thank you for keeping our community safe – Wyck, Seneschal, Malagentia
Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021, our weekly Tuesday Night Fencer/Fighter practice will move back indoors, to the USM Sullivan Gym (66 Falmouth St., Portland). Few things:
The price for day use has gone from $5 to $7. If this is burdensome, please email .
We need to be out of the gym by 8:45 p.m., sharp each night. HOWEVER, they are letting us start at 5:30 p.m.
Under current EK rules, we need to be masked at all times indoors – even while fencing/fighting.
Everyone must sign in to our practice book for contact tracing purposes.
The first time you go to the gym, leave extra time for filling out paperwork.
Folks can swing by any time before that first practice, M-F, 7a.m.-6p.m., to fill out the paperwork. Make sure to let them know this is for Blade Society.
Please remember – this is a wonderful thing that we again have indoor practice space. We have been at USM for a loooong time. Be respectful, be grateful, be cool. No shoes that leave marks, clean up after yourselves, follow the primary rule.
My dearest Malagentia, it is with a very heavy heart that I am resigning my position as Seneschal. I have been battling a disease that causes me chronic pain, and lately I have been losing the battle. My Deputy Lord Mat Wyck will step in until elections can be held. I know he will do a fantastic job. Once I can control this Dragon, I hope to be back to help. I have sent letters to kingdom Seneschal with my regrets. It has been a privilege to work with such a group of wonderful friends. Love and be kind to one another.

In response to the rapidly growing impact of COVID-19 on the global population, including yesterday’s declaration of a pandemic by the World Health Organization, the University of Maine System will begin to implement a social isolation strategy. As you may have heard, all classes will move from in-person to online beginning March 23, 2020 and all residential students will be sent home. While the offices will remain open (at this point), USM will begin to strengthen the social isolation strategy by restricting access to our fitness center and athletic complex to USM faculty, staff and students ONLY. The hours for the fitness center and building will change and are below.
Due to this unprecedented situation, we will be placing your memberships on hold effective Saturday, March 14, 2020 until this health crisis has passed or we will provide a pro-rated refund to you if that is your wish. We apologize for this inconvenience, but as you know, some things are simply out of our control and we must take appropriate precautions. We will notify you as soon as we are able to safely re-open our facilities for use and welcome people back to the Sullivan Complex. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. You can reach me directly at 207-228-8242 or by email at ().

In the wake of the spread of COVID-19, many events both locally and across the Known World are being postponed or outright cancelled. Please, if you are intending to head out to an event, confirm that it is still being held. We will try to keep our calendar as up to date as possible: https://malagentia.eastkingdom.org/main/calendar/
